I was raised Christian: church on Sundays, Bible study, youth group. These days, when people ask, I say I believe in the teachings of Jesus, but I’m uncertain on the rest.

I’ve struggled to identify with a belief system that’s been contorted to serve the very things it’s supposed to stand against. It’s disorienting to live in a country “under God” that was largely built on the backs of enslaved people, on top of land soaked with the blood and suffering of people that stewarded it for thousands of years before.

I was blessed to grow around people & teachers that helped break the American illusion for me at a young age. That clarity came with a sadness and anger I spent much of my 20s numbing and the last five years wondering if I could just leave behind. But there is no escaping where you come from. Spending January 2026 in Minneapolis resurfaced this reality for me.

I may not know yet where my “home” is religiously, but I do know that its foundation is one of kindness, compassion, and a deep faith that us humans can do better. ✋🕊️🌱
